TESTING TIPS FOR PARENTS:
- Keep calm. Don't place such a heavy stress on the outcome. Don't give punishment, but try to help the child see the test as a way to learn more. Make sure the goal is learning and not simply getting a score.
- Maintain your child's usual bedtime and morning routines on test days. If your child usually goes to bed at 9 p.m. and eats Cheerios for breakfast, don't turn off the lights at 7:30 p.m. and cook bacon and eggs for breakfast the next morning. This will only heighten the anxiety.
- Give positive encouragement.
- Have your child come prepared with 2 sharpened #2 lead pencils, be on time, and come to school with an "I Can" attitude.
- Be sure that mornings start as calmly as possible and that your child has a decent breakfast time. This should not be just on the day of the test, but every day. A healthy brain lives in a healthy body and in order to remember and do well on tests, you have to have a healthy brain.
TESTING TIPS FOR STUDENTS:
- Relax!! Studies have found the more relaxed you are, the better you will perform on a test.
- Come prepared with pencils - SHARPENED!!!
- Eat a good breakfast.
- Listen to and read the directions to the test carefully. This important step will save time and frustration as you proceed through the test.
- Take a quick look at the test before you pick up a pencil. Once you have a feel for the content, answer those questions you are confident about first, followed by the more difficult ones. This saves time and creates less frustration.
- If you are stumped, don't become nervous. Reread the question to see if you understand it. If you still have no idea how to answer it, come back to it. Later, if you still can't figure it out, make an educated guess.
- For a multiple choice question, read all the answers first, then narrow down the choices by the process of elimination. Cross off the answers that aren't correct and focus on the remaining choices before you select an answer.
- For a true/false question, you can quickly eliminate those statements that begin with "all" or "never". Those are rarely true.
- Make every effort to be neat. Make sure your handwriting is legible, your changed answers are completely erased and all answers are completely bubbled in.
- Check your answers carefully. If you have time left over, go back over your answers. Take a second look at those questions on which you guessed or did not answer at all.
